I heard that search engines favor .EDU third level domain names than any other TLDs like .com, .net etc. .EDU is exclusively intended for educational institutions. Is this perception true?

I heard also this in SEO related forums and egroups. But I personally don't believe it. I think it is still the content that matters regardless of your domain name. For one I noted that most .EDU sites do not contain much educational content to share with the surfing public.

There is nothing related with SEO and Top level domains. I think we should work on content. Your domain name can only help you if you would have some keyword in between your middle name.

Personally I think there is. Google gives a certain premium on .EDU sites. Note these are not for sale TLDS but can be availed of only by legitimate educational institutions. Unlike other TLDs, it can't be used as an avenue for spamming.

I came across some ads selling links in .EDU sites. It could be true. But the algorithm of search engines are dynamic thus this may not be applicable in the near future.
